A panel to determine compensation for victims of the Ogun market fire

Forty-eight hours after the Lafenwa Market fire in Abeokuta, the Ogun State government established a nine-person committee to investigate the incident, which left two dead and destroyed property worth millions of naira.

The government said in a statement on Tuesday by the governor’s chief press secretary Kunle Somorin that state government secretary Tokunbo Talabi had formed the committee.

The statement said SSG, in a letter dated November 29, listed the names of the committee members and terms of reference.

The committee should examine the causes of hell and find ways to avoid future events.

The statement said in part: “The committee will be chaired by the Commissioner for Special Functions, Femi Ogunbanwo; while the Permanent Secretary of the Office of Political Affairs and Administration of the Governor’s Office, Mr. Kehinde Onasanya, will act as the secretariat of the committee.

“Talabi said the committee’s mandate will include determining the remote cause of the fire; recommendation of immediate measures / actions for government intervention to prevent future events; recommendation for medium and long-term government intervention; and recommending compensation for the victims of the fire to the government.

The SSG, however, said the committee is expected to submit its report within two weeks.

“The other members of the committee are the works and infrastructure commissioner, Akin Adesanya; Transport Commissioner, Gbenga Dairo; Rural Development Commissioner, Oludotun Taiwo; her counterpart for the status of women and social development, Ms. Funmi Efuwape, president of the local government counterpart of Abeokuta North, Mr. Bayo Ayorinde; the president of the Congress of All Progressives in Local Government; and the head of the state illegality task force, Toyin Afolaogun, a deputy police commissioner.
