Chubb Bermuda Triangle Challenge canceled

The Bermuda Triangle Challenge Chubb 2022 [BTC] – which was to be held in January 2022, consisting of the Butterfield Front Street Mile, the BF&M 10K Run & Walk and the PwC Half and Full Marathon – has been officially canceled.

A spokesperson said the Chubb Bermuda Triangle Challenge is listed as a BTA flagship event on the sports tourism calendar which attracts many race participants from overseas.

“The BTC Race Committee announced the decision to cancel this event after consultations with the Bermuda Tourism Authority [BTA], its main sponsors of the event [Chubb, Butterfield Bank, Bermuda Fire and Marine, and PwC], responders, Bermuda Police Service and Department of National Security. It was jointly decided by all parties to cancel the January 2022 race weekend due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. In September and October, Bermuda was rated Level 4 by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, as a result, registration numbers were low, especially for overseas participants.

Martin Merritt, spokesperson for the BTC race committee, said: “As a precaution, the race directors have decided to cancel the 2022 Chubb Bermuda Triangle Challenge race weekend.

“The BTC race committee tried to develop low-risk race scenarios for the January 2022 event, but at the end of the day we couldn’t come up with a foolproof plan to run three major races on foot. involving more than 1,500 participants [many from overseas] and requiring hundreds of volunteers and support staff, without high risk.

“We are very disappointed to have to cancel the event for the second year in a row, but the logistics of having to organize a three-day event under these circumstances are not feasible and pose a risk to the health of everyone involved. , which seems too much of a risk to accept at this time.

Samantha Froud, Main Sponsor, Chief Administrative Officer of Chubb, Bermuda Operations, said: “Chubb is in full agreement with the BTC Race Committee to cancel this event as the health and safety of our local community is of concern. of utmost importance. Chubb remains committed as the main sponsor of the 2023 Bermuda Triangle Challenge event. We will now focus our energy on working with the Race Directors, BTA and other race sponsors, to ensure that the 2023 event is spectacular. “

Hazel Clark, Director of Sales and Business Development, BTA, added: “The Bermuda Tourism Authority understands the complex interplay of factors that led the BTC Race Committee to make the decision to cancel the 2022 event, and we support this decision. Ultimately, prioritizing the health and safety of participants, volunteers and our community will always be at the forefront of our decision making. While the reality is that the January 2022 event will not go as planned, we look forward to working with the committee to plan for the next race weekend when conditions allow. “

The organizers added, “The BTC race committee would like to inform participants who may have already registered that there is an option to postpone their registration to the 2023 race weekend or to request a refund. Attendees who have registered will receive an email this month with details on how to defer or request a refund. Additionally, the BTC Race Committee would like to thank the sponsors for their continued support.
