Stowupland man Nicholas Smith admits arson

A 20-year-old man who caused around £ 26,000 in damage after torching two vehicles will be sentenced in Crown court.

Magistrates learned how Nicholas Smith, of Creeting Road East, Stowupland, burned down a Nissan NV400 van between February 26 and March 2.

The Nissan van, which belonged to the Rodbridge Car Center, was worth £ 23,000, the court said.

Prosecutor Pretty Barber told magistrates that a firefighter said the vehicle fire started in the engine area and spread to the back of the van.

Another vehicle, a Renault Clio, was set on fire on March 3 after a rag was placed in the car’s grille area and ignited, Ms Barber said.

Fascias and gutters at a property in Creeting Road East, Stowupland, were also damaged by fire between February 26 and March 3, causing around £ 1,000 in damage.

Mark Holt, mitigating, said his client had underlying mental health issues.

Appearing in Suffolk Magistrates’ Court on Friday, Smith pleaded guilty to three counts of arson.

Magistrates referred the case to Crown court and ordered a pre-sentence report to the Probation Service.

Smith has been released on unconditional bail and will appear before Ipswich Crown Court for a sentence on a date to be fixed.
