A fire that scorched dozens of acres of a field off Chatham Road near Johnson Mill Road occupied six fire stations on Thursday afternoon. The fire broke out shortly after noon. and firefighters were still on the scene at 2 p.m. Liberty Fire Chief Randy Fisher estimated it affected 30 to 40 acres, but said they wouldn’t know for sure until it was inspected by the Virginia Department of Forestry. , who was also on the scene. Firefighters from Oak Level Volunteer Fire Department, Liberty Volunteer Fire Department, Triangle Volunteer Fire Department, Halifax Volunteer Fire Department, North Halifax Volunteer Fire Department and the Riceville Java Volunteer Fire Department fought the blaze.
